Write Your Why is the second Journaling tip in my 7 part series, How to Use Your Journal for Success, to help you succeed in your Network Marketing business.
I know, I know, by now everyone you’ve talked to in Network Marketing has hammered it into your head to write your WHY.
Well, there’s good reason.
Everyone knows when someone first joins a network marketing company, they are excited.
They get started and a thousand things go wrong.
They want to quit a thousand times. Most people just quit.
“You need a strong enough reason to do it. Then if what you’re doing doesn’t work, you’ll figure out some other way. But if you’re at all wishy-washy, you’re a goner.
First thing we do in coaching is help you figure out your WHY.”
Now this is important! I don’t care if you’ve been in the business for 10 minutes or 10 years, you have to write your WHY fresh each year!
This important leadership action step is honestly the thing that will keep you going in this business until you finally crack the code for yourself and have the level of success you’ve been dreaming of.
If you are already on the road to success, reviewing and renewing your WHY will keep you on track and could inspire you to greater heights.
Write your WHY on a fresh page of your journal just after your Goals.
Now, I’m sure you’ve heard it said that your why is different from your goals. Your why cannot be about money.
Hmmm.
I have a goal to take my family on vacation to DisneyLand for Christmas which will cost a healthy grand if we all can go. That is a goal.
But WHY do I want to do this?
Why would you want to take your kids and grandchildren on a trip to DisneyLand to meet Mickey & the Gang and go on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride?
For me, I want to spend time with my family doing something super fun and exciting that I enjoyed doing as a child. I love the happy memories of going places with my parents. I had their full attention, no work or TV distractions. It was great sharing the adventures together.
I want to treat my children and my grandchildren to vacations where we can spend special time together.
I want to share adventures with them, whether it be exploring “It’s a Small World Afterall” or the world’s largest ball of twine off some obscure highway we find on a road trip.
That is one of my Whys. It drives my desires and emotions. It matters to me.
One of my mentor’s, Marcello Lisi, shared the method he recommends using to identify your 3 big WHYs…
- Think of the 3 emotions or feelings you want to feel every day.
- Focus on those.
- Your Why will come to you.
Another mentor on our team, Roisin O’Connor, used Marcello’s method to come up with her top 3 WHYs she wants to experience…
- Love, Joy, & Peace
- Peace of Mind, Comfort, and Ease
- A Sense of Fulfillment and Accomplishment.
Now, I will share with you my Whys from last year…I want…
- to feel Successful, Confident, and Courageous.
- to make an income that allows me to provide for mine and my children’s needs and extras…vacations, time together…treat my extended family to gifts…enjoy philanthropy.
- my actions to be useful tools and encouragement for others so they can be successful in their personal development and in building their home-based business…to be a leader.
Over the Christmas break, I took the time to reacquaint myself with many of our basic trainings. One of the things I did was re-read Success In Ten Steps.
I stopped in Chapter 2 and took the time to do the activities…I answered all of the questions Michael gives us to help us figure out our WHY.
I sent it all to Michael and in the end, I revised my WHYs to a keener focus…
- I want to feel the pride and accomplishment of being successful and confident in my MLM business.
- I want the security of knowing I can provide for all of my financial needs from my own efforts in working my MLM business.
- I want to inspire & teach others others so they feel the confidence to succeed at their dreams.
Your WHY and the other things you do in your Personal Development are extremely intimate and unique to you. Sometimes it can be difficult to get to the core of your True Why.
Another point to keep in mind is that your Why has to be about you! You cannot base your Why on what you want other people to think, feel or want. Check out the Goals post where I discussed this point at leangth.
But let me tell you something. I promise you that if you follow through with getting to your why, your personal and professional life will take on an entirely new meaning!
I just finished reading Every Second Counts by Lance Armstrong.
After he won his fifth Tour de France race, he remarked that “records are hard to feel. They’re measures, or markers, that we use to set limits.”
Lance said the only people who could understand what it really meant to have “five Tour de France victories, were his teammates and the other four men who had done it.”
Each one of those people has their own meaning for those incredible accomplishments. “I only knew what it meant to me: it represented the number of times I had gotten back up.”
WOW!
That is the significance of having your “nailed” WHY. It’s what keeps you getting back up!
So here’s your challenge.
Work on, or re-work, your WHY. Do it now. And write it by hand into your Journal, just after your Goals, so you can easily read it any time.
If you need some help with your WHY, check out that activity I told you about in Chapter 2 of Success In 10 Steps. My door is always open, so if you’d like some mentoring on your Why, let me know!
I always love to hear what you have to say. Please leave your thoughts in the comments section below.
Remember!…Sharing is Caring!…Please Like, Tweet & Share this post so others can benefit, too!

Hi Karen,
You’re right! Your “WHY” has to be attached to emotions, that’s why it could never be just money. You can’t feel…”I want to be financially free.” But you can feel…”I’d like to spend lots of time with my children. Enjoy watching them play soccer, baseball, hockey. Take them on vacation, etc.” That paints “pictures in your mind” which you can literally feel.
Thanks for sharing your wisdom!
